How to Use LinkedIn to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Linkedin is a professional networking platform. where employers and employees can connect to each other. LinkedIn had 630 million registered members in 200 countries as of june 2019. And 2 new members join LinkedIn per second. These numbers are larger than the population of some of the countries.

According to Adweek article, 87% of recruiters prefer LinkedIn to find new talent. It is a huge platform exploding with infinite opportunities. The only thing you need to learn is how to grab them.

This platform is not only for job hunting and hiring. LinkedIn can be beneficial for bloggers and business owners too. You can redirect LinkedIn traffic to your own website to boost your sales and revenue.

Being in the field of blogging from the last 3 years I have learned a lot about LinkedIn algorithms. In this post, I will share some secret tips and tricks that I learned through my journey.

Here are some tips for every LinkedIn user must keep in mind:

  • Take your LinkedIn profile as your resume. Pay utmost attention to every single detail you are putting up there and be honest.
  • The profile picture and background picture is a must. LinkedIn says you’re 14 times more likely to get more views if you have a photo.

Here are some points to keep in mind while updating LinkedIn profile picture:

  • The LinkedIn profile picture should be your own photo. picture of your significant other or family members is a big no-no. do not confuse LinkedIn with Facebook. Facebook is a personal platform and LinkedIn is a professional platform.
  • Avoid Duck faced and pouty selfies.
  • Do not forget to update your background photo. It has to be something that matches your brand’s motto. Background photos help your profile to stand out.
  • Connect with people from the same field and join LinkedIn groups of similar interest.
  • Customize your LinkedIn URL. Go to your profile page. On the right-hand side, you will see the Edit public profile & URL. Click on the tab and edit the URL. Keep it close to your first and last name. Do not use that cutesy nicknames in your profile URL.
  • Fill profile summary truthfully and try to include search terms and keywords related to your work profile. It will help you reach out to the targeted audience.
  • List your skills on LinkedIn and allow people to endorse you.
  • Make sure if someone writes a recommendation for you, it is not applicable for every other candidate. It must be unique and honest.
  • Keep posting your work-related updated on a regular basis.
  • Keep in touch with your connections. Linkedin has a inbuilt feature where you can congratulate people on the new jobs, work anniversaries and birthdays. Utilize this feature.

Text-only posts work best on the LinkedIn but bloggers like me, freelancers or other business owners have to showcase their work now and then hence it’s important for us to include external links frequently. Now let’s move on to some secret tricks that will help you to redirect LinkedIn traffic to your own website.

I have been posting my blog links on LinkedIn from last two years. But still struggling to get enough impressions and engagements. you know why? Because I was not aware of how the LinkedIn algorithm work? The LinkedIn algorithms hate external links. Everytime you click on external link you leave the linkedin platform. And Linkedin doesn’t like to send their users to anywhere else.

As you can see in the first picture I posted the link to my blog. The total reach of this post was 58 without any engagements. in the contrary the second picture with text only post has 695 views, 13 reactions and 7 comments. Text only posts performed way better than the link only posts.

So should we not post links on LinkedIn? We can but here is the trick.

Write-Post-Edit Method:

John Espirian a technical copywriter has a clever trick to post external links on LinkedIn which is “Write-Post-Edit Method”.

Step 1: Write your text post but do not include the external link you want to share.

Step 2: Publish the post.

Step 3: Click on the Edit post option in the top-right corner of the post. Include the external links you want to share and save.

Posting links by this method doesn’t include the link preview. This trick works like magic. Your post reach and engagement will boom.

I tried write-post-edit method and it worked. You can see the post got 66 view in 7 hr whereas link posts took 3 days to reach 58 people. The difference is remarkable.

Link in the first comment:

Recently I have noticed new trend in linkedin. People are publishing text post referring to the link in the first comment. You know why? As we know that LinkedIn give preference to the text only posts. And links in the comment doesn’t need an immediate call-to-action. Hence the algorithm pushes this kind of posts more.

Write excerpt of your blog and mention at the end of your post where people can find the link. As shown in the picture below:

So that’s all for today. I will keep updating this post as soon as I learn something new. If you something that I haven’t mentioned in this post please feel free to share. Let’s help each other to grow higher and stronger.

For now, signing off until next post.
