Nowadays, people have become extremely conscious about their facial experience. There has been a surge in use of cosmetic procedures to eliminate facial flaws or improve the appearance of certain features. It often helps people experience better self-esteem and confidence, which in turn promotes a sense of happiness and well-being in life.
Talking about facial appearance, our teeth are also a significant part of it. Smiles and laughter reveal the condition of teeth so people want to have the perfect pearly whites. Some people find themselves unhappy with the way their teeth appear. This leads to an avoidance of smiling. Hence, one’s quality of life can be negatively affected.
Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry is helping many people improve their facial appearance by making their teeth appear more aesthetic. Cosmetic dentistry includes multiple procedures. Some people may be satisfied with a simple teeth whitening procedure while others will choose a complete smile makeover. It is common to have a combination of procedures too; targeting multiple issues.
In the following article, we mention 5 common cosmetic dentistry procedures and how they are applied:
Many suffer from the issue of yellowish or stained teeth. Stained teeth can be caused by the types of food or drinks we take. Tea, coffee, wine, and cola can easily stain the outer coating of the teeth. This is known as extrinsic staining. Similarly, smoking is also a common cause of this type of teeth staining.
Teeth whitening or bleaching is one of the simplest cosmetic dentistry procedures. It can effectively resolve extrinsic staining of the teeth. Before the dentist starts this procedure, they will get the teeth rid of debris like tartar and plaque. Whitening is then started to restore the natural color of the teeth. Some people will opt for teeth bleaching as well. This process will give the teeth an even lighter shade than their natural one; creating a more aesthetic look.
Dental implants are a more intricate procedure of the cosmetic dentistry. Implants are used as a solution for teeth loss. The implants that are inserted in place of the missing teeth are quite durable and thanks to modern technology and dentistry, the appearance is quite natural and aesthetic.
Dental implants include an artificial tooth root and a crown. The tooth root is often made out of titanium but other options are available as well. This root is surgically inserted into the jaw bone. It is supposed to get infused with the bone to provide better support for the crown. This process of infusing is known as osseointegration. It is because of this process of integration that implants are known for their durability.
After the root has strongly infused into the bone, a crown is attached on the top. This acts as the artificial replacement for the missing tooth.
The process of dental implants can take a lot of time and it is an invasive technique. A person needs a recovery period of around 6 months after the root is implanted and only then the crown is attached. However, modern dentistry has made the procedure quite comfortable. Therefore, a client can expect considerably less pain and discomfort as compared to before. Today, dental clinics are very focused on offering services that induce less amount of anxiety.
You may have heard of a gummy smile or noticed that some people expose a lot of gum tissue when they smile. While many people may not have a problem with such an appearance, others don’t want their smile to look that way.
For improving a gummy smile, the process of gingival contouring is used. This may include laser treatment, orthodontics, gingival sculpting, surgical lip repositioning or maxillofacial surgery. Such procedures are performed by dental specialists like orthodontists or periodontists. In some cases, an oral surgeon may be hired.
Dental veneers are made out of ceramic that is of the medical grade in nature. For the purpose of cosmetic dentistry, veneers are often manufactured from porcelain. The veneers are customized for each patient and will resemble their natural teeth. This is a great solution for issues like damaged enamel (cracks), crooked teeth, gaps between the teeth, and other cosmetic problems related to the teeth.
They also work great when the tooth staining is an intrinsic issue. Teeth whitening works fine as long as the staining is on the outer layer. However, if the dentin darkens, which is the part of inner teeth structure, a simple teeth whitening will not work effectively. It is important to mention that veneers require an invasive dental technique. It will permanently alter the natural appearance of the teeth.
The dental veneers are applied at the front of the teeth using a dental adhesive. Many people opt for dental veneers to improve the appearance of their smile as it provides quite aesthetic results.
Inlays and Onlays:
Inlays and Onlays are indirect teeth filings. These are created at a dental lab. They work quite effectively in case of mildly and moderately decayed tooth. These are used when the teeth have decayed enough that it does not have sufficient structure to support a filling.
Inlays are used when the cusp of the tooth is still protected and it is placed directly onto the surface. On the other hand, Onlays are used when the cusp is damaged too. The Onlay will cover the entire surface of the tooth.
Cosmetic dentistry may be required in emergency situations. For example, some people may have suffered a mishap where their dental appearance becomes damaged and needs restoration. Others may opt for the procedure for the purpose of beauty enhancement.
If you are seeking beauty enhancement, it is highly preferable to consult an expert. This will help you identify if you are the right candidate for cosmetic dentistry or not. It may also open you to multiple options so you can select the most suitable. Also, discuss the procedure results with your chosen specialist as well to have a realistic idea about the final look.
