HOW TO PREVENT GUM DISEASE?


Gum disease or periodontal disease can lead to tooth decay of not treated at the earliest. It generally starts with bacteria grown in the mouth and often causes tooth loss. Someone with gum disease always carries the risk of gradual destruction of the tissue surrounding the teeth. The worst thing about gum disease is their tendency to progress painlessly and without producing any noticeable signs and symptoms. For that reason, one should always consult the dentist on a regular basis, have a complete oral check-up and spot any signs of trouble in the teeth or gums. 

Gum disease symptoms:

It’s never easy to know gum disease symptoms in early stages as they are mostly subtle and not that visible. However, there are some signs you should take seriously they often indicate something wrong with the gums. The symptoms may include –

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
  • A sensitive gum with some swelling or redness
  • Persistent bad breath in the mouth
  • Experiencing bad taste in the mouth that is persistent
  • Receding gums with loose or shifting teeth
  • A slight change to the teeth fitting when you bite

Prevention of gum disease:

Gum disease is preventable if you seek timely treatment for it and adopt a superior oral care hygiene. You have to stop any buildup of the plaque and tartar and bacteria on the gum as they can harm the tissue gradually and lead to disease. You can follow these steps to prevent your gum disease –    

Superior oral hygiene:

Unless you start giving more attention to your oral hygiene and dental care routine, you can’t expect to tackle gum disease confidently. You have to brush twice a day, floss immediately after brushing and then clean the tongue to ward off dangers that plaque poses. You have to eat right, avoid sugar-laced items and change the eating habits a bit to keep your gums healthy. 

Stop smoking:

You should know that tobacco users are always at greater risk of gum disease than the rest. Smoking is a big risk factor for periodontitis and the earlier you get rid of the habit, the better it will be for your oral health. Your use of tobacco in any form, including smoking can reduce the chance of success with dental treatments.

Follow a well-balanced diet:

Only a well-balanced diet with a regular supply of vital nutrients and vitamins can help you stay on top of your oral health. Such a diet can strengthen your immune system which can keep gums ready to fight infection and inflammation. Some foods to eat regular include apples, green leafy vegetables, nuts, citrus fruits, potatoes etc. They will ensure a steady supply of vitamin E, vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus essential for your dental health.  

Stop teeth clenching and grinding:

Teeth clenching and grinding is bad for your oral health as they can weaken the dental structure in future. When you clean or grind the teeth on a consistent basis, it can put force on the tissues supporting the teeth. This is how the underlying tissues get damaged which in the process makes the gum weak. So, you should not clench the teeth and see the dentist if the habit persists. 

Reduce stress:

High level of stress is also a likely reason behind gum disease. When someone lives with negative emotions and stress, it weakens the body’s immune system.
