Name: Deepti Gupta
Occupation: Software Development Engineer
Highest weight recorded: 220lbs
Weight lost: 72lbs
Duration took me to lose weight: 8-10 months
The day I got the news that I am pregnant with our second child, I was super excited, at the same time little nervous too. I was looking at myself in the mirror, the slim, beautiful, all-in shape. I weighed 141 lbs. that day. During my pregnancy I got hypothyroidism during pregnancy, my weight shot to 220lbs the day I went in that delivery room. This extra weight became a problem not only because my clothes were not fitting me but it gave me other health issues too. I got plantar fasciitis, numb hands, joints pain and rheumatoid arthritis.
I visited from hand therapists to orthopedics but nothing helped when I researched and found out that the common cause of all the health issues is my overweight.
Finally, I made up my mind that I need to lose weight. I started on an all-plant-based diet with no grains for 20 days. It helped me detox all the toxins from my body with the extra eating and extra sitting and resting that comes with feeding and handling the baby. I could not join a gym while juggling the work, older kid, baby, mid-night feedings, etc. I kept my goals very realistic.I started walking during lunchtimes every day. I started using stairs instead of the elevators, every small change that I could easily incorporate into my daily routine.
I believe in a holistic approach for fitness and health, I believe yoga, dance-cardio, walking, smaller movements even like picking up toys from the floor to pumping calories in the gym, meditation, positive thinking, massage, sauna and steam bath all together contribute to your health. I did it all but not everything every day, I planned it in a way to fit into my daily routine without adding too much stress of doing too much.
My daily routine for 6 months(religiously):
I started 10 mins of pranayama and 20 mins of Surya Namaskar flow. I am a yoga practitioner for years so knew about the flow and poses already but these are easily available online these days.
My Breakfast: 1 slice sprouted seeds bread, 1 cup tea, 1 glass of protein smoothie
My lunch: 1 bowl rice, veggies, and salad
Dinner: Veggies and dal
Morning snack: 1 banana or 1 apple or any other seasonal fruit
Afternoon snack: Nuts and greek yogurt
Anytime Low-calorie snacks I always carry: Almonds, roasted makhane, roasted gooseberries, yogurt and salad
Now I am a Fitness instructor myself and workout almost every day with regular recovery breaks. I practice Bollywood dancing with my fitness freaky workouts incorporated into dancing.
My biggest detox:
Soak my foot in warm saline water every night.
My Fitness secrets:
Consistency and belief that every step counts, no matter how small.
How do you ensure you don’t lose focus:
The uncountable mean compliments that I received from people before losing weight and uncountable appreciative compliments that I receive now after losing weight is one thing that helps me stay focused.
Lifestyle changes I made:
Introduced small movements for smaller time intervals. It is not the hour-long gym pumping that makes a bigger difference, it is the small movements all along the day that makes a bigger consistent difference.
Lessons learned from weight loss:
Weight gain/ over-weight can be the cause of 80% of the diseases that we carry these days, get rid of that and get rid of your other unrelated diseases.
Make staying healthy your number 1 priority.
