High Cholesterol has become a big health issue in the last few decades. The relation of high cholesterol with Cardio-Vascular complications and cancer has made it an alarming issue of the medical science. High cholesterol can be controlled and even treated any time with some easy and affordable changes to your diet, habits, and routines.
What is High Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a lipid or simply a type of fat, Made in the liver. It helps the body perform many useful functions and produce necessary fat for the body. It carries fat from the liver into the blood stream. It also helps in the formation of fat-protein chemicals called lipoproteins. Lipoproteins (LDLs), also called “bad cholesterol,” and high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). HDLs, also known as “good cholesterol,” helps remove lipids from the bloodstream.
VLDLs and LDLs can also be a big cause to clog arteries. High levels of cholesterol, including LDLs, and triglycerides (fats) increase the risk for hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and can cause Cardiovascular complications.
Causes and Symptoms of high Cholesterol:
Hyperlipidemia can be inherited from parents or family. High Cholesterol can cause fatness, diabetes and heart problems. Cholesterol clogs the blood streams and cannot be diagnosed until this stage is reached in most people. High Cholesterol can be diagnosed with some tests initially suggested by the physicians. The results are determined from the amounts of HDL and LDL levels in the blood samples.
Blood levels of cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides are checked in the tests. Preferred levels must be less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) for cholesterol, less than 150 mg/dl for triglycerides, and over 40 mg/dl for HDLs recommended and healthy LDL levels must be less than 130 mg/dl in most cases but much lower (less than 70 mg/dl) for those with cardiovascular problems and diabetes.
Treatment and Precautionary measures:
Healthy habits lead to healthy life. Healthy habits can enable you to avoid going to doctors. Balance diet is the beset way to reduce lipid level in the blood. your habits can make you achieve the goal of saturated fat level up to 7% of calories and cholesterol to a level of less 200mg/ per day.
Weight loss, regular exercise jogging, avoiding smoking and reducing fats can lead to an ideal health. The main cause of health problems originates in smoking and drugs.
You will never be able to achieve your good health with smoking and drugs. Use of fresh fruits, vegetable, and juices are highly recommended for the balanced cholesterol levels and thus a healthy life. Fibre-food and fruits are also helpful in reducing cholesterol levels up to the normal standards. Drinking and smoking habits can worsen the situation for patients of cholesterol levels, sugar and heart problems.

I was told I had high cholesterol which was strange given my diet and weight at the lower end of the scale, but that I had enough ‘good cholesterol’ to balance this out (not sure how true that is!) Will take these points on board as I’m still quite concerned by it. Very useful post! x
